Registered massage therapy has been proven to relieve pain located deeper than at skin level in the human body. It is also one of our newest services at Triumph Physio!

What is Registered Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is often referred to as ‘soft-tissue manipulation’. It’s commonlyused to provide immediate pain relief, optimize body mechanics, and enhance flexibility allowing for improved rehabilitation of your body’s muscle and joint function. Massage therapy is very helpful in the management and treatment of stress related complaints, headaches, lower back pain, post motor vehicle accident, whiplash, TMJ syndrome, carpel tunnel, arthritis, post-surgical rehabilitation/ scar tissue and sport injuries. It is also very useful for managing the muscular aches and pains experienced during pregnancy, or when recovering from neurological conditions such as stroke, or multiple sclerosis.

Who is a Registered Massage Therapist?

The term Registered massage Therapist (RMT) is use to described a practitioner who have completed post-secondary education in massage therapy and have successfully completed the Provincial board examinations in massage therapy. RMTs are one of over 25 professions that are regulated at the Provincial level, other regulated professions include physiotherapists, doctors, nurses, dentists, chiropractors etc.

Registered Massage therapists (RMTs) in British Columbia are health care professional who are educated to assess and treat within their scope of practice, the muscle, joints, ligaments, fascia and other soft tissues of the body. RMTs typically use and apply a variety of techniques and modalities such as manualtherapy, myofascial therapy, lymph drainage, joint mobilization, hydrotherapy, rehabilitative exercise, guided breathing, functional retraining, and patient education.

You can meet our new staff member who is a licensed RMT on our team page.

Is RMT a Covered-by-Insurance Service or Not?

Some extended health policies such as Pacific Blue Cross or Sunlife offer Massage Therapy benefits and require that the services are provided by a registered massage therapist. ICBC does provide coverage for massage therapy for car accident related injuries. So long as you have an active claim and it’s included in your health policy, you can request to receive this service. If your claim is more than 90 days old, please call the clinic so that our staff can assist with insuring you have coverage for RMT services.

You can view more about ICBC coverage details on our ICBC and WorkSafeBC services page.

Do I Need Physio or Massage Therapy?

It can be tricky to figure out whether you need a physiotherapist’s help or if massage therapy is a better fit. You can decide by determining whether your specific case applies to the following, for example:

· Improved Blood Circulation

  • Both massage therapy and physiotherapy help with this.

· Muscle Spasms

  • Ask for massage therapy! Again, it provides immediate pain relief and improves circulation, both of which can ease muscle spasms.

· Sprains And Strains

  • With very acute sprains and strains physio would be the first choice. After the acute stage, both physio and massage therapy treatment are appropriate. These injuries are related to body mobility and motion, which are the key components of what both therapies addresses.

· Immediate Pain Relief

  • The effects are felt at once during the first session of either massage therapy or physio.

· Improved Sports Performance

  • In which case, regular massage therapy or physiotherapy sessions can help to achieve this.

· Endorphin Increase

  • Definitely an effect of registered massage therapy!

· Treatment For Complicated Cases

  • Examples include post-surgical conditions, chronic pain, and arthritis to name a few. In these cases, physiotherapy is what you should plan for.
